Potential risks of laser hair removal include temporary or permanent hypo/ hyperpigmentation which can occur even when optimal laser treatment parameters are used. Two of the more noticeable side effects of laser hair removal are hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation. Hypopigmentation refers to the lightening of the skin and on the other hand, hyperpigmentation refers to the darkening of the skin. Both of them can occur after a laser hair removal treatment. The absorption of laser light can, in some cases, inhibit melanin production, leading to a loss of pigment and as a result, hypopigmentation will occur. In opposite, laser hair removal sometimes could stimulate melanin production inside the skin which results in hyperpigmentation.
Both of these conditions mostly happen in patients with darker skin. Hyperpigmentation is typically reversible, hypopigmentation is not as easy as to be treated. There is a chance the skin will re-pigment but it depends on the skin's ability and also the depth of the burn. Daily usage of sunscreen is key. By using effective sunscreen you can protect the pigmented areas.
